The Balance of Physical and Mental Stimulation

Tired dog = Good dog

Finding balance helps prevent your dog from becoming overly tired, stressed, or bored, which can lead to various issues.

Physical Exercises:

  • Walks
  • Play
  • Sports
  • Training

It helps in muscle development, releases accumulated energy, and reduces the chances of unwanted behavioral issues (e.g., destruction, excessive barking).

Mental Stimulation:

  • Training – e.g., teaching tricks
  • Nose work – searching for scents, specific objects
  • Interactive games – puzzles
  • Exploring new places

What happens if we overdo them?

Too much physical activity can overload the muscles and joints, leading to pain and stress. Without mental stimulations, your dog’s behavior could lead to anxiety and destructive behavior. Excessive mental fatigue can cause your dog to lose interest in games, becoming demotivated. Too much stimulation and new tasks may cause confusion and demotivation.

How to achieve the right balance?

  • Mix both types of activities; for example, during walks, include cooperative tasks (waiting at crosswalks, maintaining eye contact, practicing staying in place).

  • Pay attention to your dog’s reactions – if they’re too tired or overly energetic, it means they’re doing too much at once.

  • Rest time is important – allow your dog to recover.

By setting the right balance, fewer behavioral problems are likely to arise.
